Fish can be cultured in a variety of ways for several purposes. Here in Washington State, which supports the world's largest hatchery system, fish culturists are in high demand to support local fisheries and aquatic ecosystems. At Bellingham Technical College, our program runs two hatcheries in partnership with the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife. We annually raise 2-3 million salmonids to support local fisheries and ecosystems. We have a program mission to actively pursue community outreach, where our students discuss the value of salmon hatcheries and the importance of natural stewardship. We engage community youth in educational games and offer real skills training to explore a career working with salmon.
